Commissions
Every home has its own character, and I enjoy creating textiles that quietly become part of it.
Eleanor welcomes a small number of commissions throughout the year, creating one-of-a-kind textile pieces that remain true to her botanical, hand-crafted practice while responding thoughtfully to the homes they are made for.
Commissions are shaped by the seasons, with colours and materials guided by the plants available in the dye garden and the nature of the natural dye process. Rather than replicating existing work, each piece is developed individually, making every commission entirely unique.
Alongside creating new work, Eleanor is also happy to discuss recovering treasured lampshades and selected pieces of furniture or homeware using her hand-dyed cloth, where suitable.

I had seen Eleanor’s traditional dying work using deep blue dyes and, since this matched the decor of one of the rooms in my flat overlooking the sea in Brighton, thought her work would look beautiful in that setting.
In my head, I could see four small fabric panels using the traditional dyeing and embroidery techniques, each one different but complementing each other as a whole. I invited Eleanor to visit the space and to discuss the commission. What evolved from our discussion was the idea of sun and moon, night and day, sea and sky. Inspired by these elements of nature, and by her visit to Brighton, Eleanor combined the two traditional Japanese techniques of Shibori dying and Sashiko embroidery to create four beautiful small square panels: a full moon shimmering behind broken clouds, casting its beams across the still water; the noon-day sun sparkling on gentle waves; a murmuration of starlings flitting over the sea; and a moon glowing in a deep blue night sky.
I am absolutely thrilled with my commission from Eleanor, which fits so well in my home and complements the space beautifully. Eleanor was sensitive to and mindful of my wishes, but added so much to these with her own artistic sensitivity and skilful mastery of the dying and embroidery techniques. I have had the artwork for several years now and what delights and astounds me most is the feeling of motion and movement which somehow Eleanor has managed to evoke in the different panels, meaning that I never tire of gazing upon the artwork.
